'headBACK!'
SUPPORT AS PEER (18-55 YEAR OLD, HIGH COGNITIVE RESERVE) TBI SURVIVORS

LIKE OWN RETURN
Stayed involved
→Overcome TAUOPATHY
Thru BrainInjuryCare,ProjectManagement,PeerSupport

THIS→Stop TAU in hippocampus
LINK Memory→Task→Action
USE THIS THRU 'COGNITIVE RESERVE'!

FOR ME
After myTBI→No memory PreAccidentLoss&MakingNew
→But HIGHER CR help RELEARN memory→LINK
→want to help 18-55 year old Peers

COGNITIVE RESERVE (CR), term used to tell the ways the mind can use to compensate for damage to their brain, now popular for seniors&their caregivers,esp cos of connection to one of the biggest issues of modern aging:Dementia

Research shows that people with solid stores of CR, less likely to exhibit the classic signs of dementia—short-term memory loss, difficulty multitasking—brain scans show mental damage
→CR effectively makes the mind stronger and nimble, allows for ways to compensate for disease-related loss

Finding from Green (2013)
http://www.uhn.ca/corporate/News/PressReleases/Pages/TR_GreenRobin_ChronicTBI.aspx

So to counter the on-going damage or atrophy
→The inflammation,delayed programmed cell death&excessive build up of TAU affectsHealthy nearby cells
→Damaged tissue disconnects brain's HealthyAreas,causing those under-stimulated areas→die

CR COUNTER PROGRESSIVE DETERIORATION
MoreAbleSurvivors higherCR, can handle more pathology
→hB! support Educated peers

GreaterABILITY, less LOSS→me Peer

ESP LINK MEMORIES
→CRbyEducation→UseLink→Recall→DoTasks
CR→way to look at brain's ability to restore pathology

Higher CR→retrace steps→build Links→use(RE)LEARNING
→KEY IS EXERCISE→HELPS COGNITIVE ABILITIES

Active survivor of severeTBI(March1988), help other of a higher cognitive reserve:
→learn, communicate→rebuild their dialogue-,memory-&task-doing abilities→Employment

My new aim of 'The HICupARThi-st'!

Thru helping other survivors thru things (like HIC -the HeadInjuryCafe- and ARThi -art doing with those who survive Brain injury) I want to help other brain injury survivors take part again.

People always see survivors as 'Observers'.
==> That is not right! <==
email me if near Edinburgh and I can help you!

Thanx!

To do things, and to take part again after a Brain Injury is hard.

After my own TBI (1988), I had to rebuild all of that.
--> This came to me in two stages;
-learning to be with, then to then work with people. As well as
-to learn that needed in prep for work.

Both these came slowly.

WHAT HELPED ME
I did creative work for myself and in community.
Included work with other disabled- and brain injured- peers.
=>Learned lots.

NOW WANT TO HELP OTHER TBI/ABI SURVIVORS.

->Set up=> 'HICupARThi-st'<-
based on what helped me.
This peer-support shares how learning to DO things needs two sides;
-to Work with others;
needed are to listen, to remember, to resume, deal with one-to-one, then to work with, then in groups.
-that needs focus, memory, use of hands, learning to resume and may be even change things, helps work.

Just found out about Disabled People User-ed Orgaisations (DPULOs) that receive Lib/Conservative Government backing.

WANT TO DO THAT, AND SET UP, A SCOTTISH (EDINBURGH-BASED) DPULO.
Can anybody help?
